Documentary Project
‘The same tower’

The 2020 edition of the Transatlantic Dialogue is an epitome of this meeting that abounds in the ways of materializing the interchange to promote peace. From the motto ‘Re-imagining the Tower of Babel’, the project that started in 2008 the University of Luxembourg and the Miami University, adds people from multiple origins who are involved under the premise of trusting in who is different and speak another language.

The film begins basing on the Biblical story of the Tower of Babel, the founding myth of the challenge that human beings have to find understanding and points in common with those that are different. This text of the Bible works as a metaphor for the tension between diversity and uniformity. As the Dalai Lama points out, we must coexist on the same planet through dialogue. And the TAD is a forum created to promote communication in favor of concord. The title of the film transfers the symbolic element of the biblical tower to the present, when we are increasingly interdependent and where we share the same place. There is a collective will in participants of the Transatlantic Dialogue to look for the adequate human communication that should preserve peace, being able to reach the next generations and assuming our transience in the world. The mission of transmitting peace is thus assumed as a challenge that tests our capacity for coexistence.

Synopsis

According to the Bible, after the universal flood, King Nemrod thought about the construction of the Tower of Babel, a common building that would reach heaven in a time when all the people spoke the same language. The ambition infuriated the god Yahweh, who truncated the project confusing men and making them speak different languages. This would have begun the human challenge to find an understanding between cultures. Since 2008, in the Greater Region, between the Roman Europe and Germanic Europe, the University of Luxembourg organizes the Transatlantic Dialogue. This event, with participants from multiple origins, seeks the understanding under the premise of trusting the different. A celebration of the diversity that re-imagines the story of the Bible, a reflection of the same tower in which we coexist: this planet in motion where we must counteract our transitiveness with a solid legacy of peace for the future.

World Premiere
‘In the twilight of Antagonism’

… composed by Enjott Schneider (*1950)

  1.  Colors of Antagonism
  2.  „Peace“- the way of reconciliation / the Path to Reconciliation
  3.  Song for a World beyond Future

The journey of this string quartet in three parts begins with the mysterious twilight of antagonistic, ambiguous misunderstandings. It leads to the metaphor of peace, perhaps the most ideal state of human togetherness. In the last part a utopia is celebrated [The last part – a celebration of Utopia]: the hope that beyond a still imaginable future there will be a life full of happiness and positive basic feelings for everyone. The harmony of four string instruments playing in unison may be a symbol of this longed-for world.

… performed by the Henschel String Quartet: Christoph Henschel & Teresa la Cour, violins; Monika Henschel, viola; Mathias Beyer-Karlshøj, cello.
